Review

The blog I am reviewing is called open your eyes to music. This blog is about the Sydney music scene. It tells people what going on and when it’s happening. The main thing that the blog is talking about right now is the Sydney song summit. In this it talks about all of the people that will be performing, what are they performing, were and what times. This blog also discuses bands their stories and their songs.

One thing that I like about this blog is that it tells the stories of bands quite well. One band it tells the story of is the beach boys. It starts of talking about their roaring days of success with surf music in the late 1950’s, and then goes to explain what happed to them and why. Under the title “the early days,” one can see the blogger talking about the surfing days “the Beach Boy’s tale that will never be forgotten is their surfer music.” Later on in the post it talks about their fall, “Their efforts to use their position, at the helm of popular music, to steer listeners into new direction.... it’s safe to say they failed.” This post talks about everything one needs to understand the beach boy’s story. This is done very well and this is something I like about this blog very much.

Another thing I like about this blog is that it tells you very clearly what’s happening at the Sydney song summit. It lists very clearly who is playing and when, it also provides a link to the official website for the event.  One can see a list of who is playing at the song summit at the top of the blog, “Dan Kelly, Artisan Guns, The Last Kinection and many more. You can also see what time people are playing at, at the bottom of the first post. “Dead letter Chorus, Home Nightclub, Darling Harbour form 7:30,” this is just one example. All up this blog shows what’s happening at the Sydney song summit very well.

After looking at this blog, and the way it talks about what is happening, and stories of bands. I think this is very good and would recommend this as a music blog.

The reason I love music so much is that it awakes so many emotions in us. Some songs make you happy some make you sad. People bond over music, whether they are just singing in the backyard together, or going to a big performance were there are thousands of people all lined up to hear someone.

Some of the most fun I have with music is just meeting up with friends and having a jam. Where there are no real rules, and everyone just plays together according to how they feel. Often the best sounds people ever play is when they are just making it up on the spot. Something else I love to go to are open mike nights, you get to see lots of people, all just having fun and improvising. Some of the best musicians I have heard were at these open nights.

I also find that very large concerts to be exciting to. When I go at watch a band that is just so good, I get so into it. It is a combination of the music, and also the great show that is going on in front of you. With the entire crowd going wild it almost is like a different world.

I find there are so many different types of music, to suit any mood or any person. It is a magical thing that can take you away from the reality you are in and to something completely different.

The invention of the internet has greatly increased people ability to share music, by their favourite artist, and recording of themselves. Before the internet the only way to listen to music was to have a physical copy of the recording, such and CD or record, or wait until it was played on the radio or television. However now the just a few clicks people can listen to anything they want.

Many up and coming artist use the internet a lot to get their name and music heard, and talked about. They can do this quite easily and inexpensively because it is quite often free to set up music pages on websites. There are also many competitions run over the internet, aimed at helping rising musicians get help to record and to share their music.

Before the invention of the internet it was almost impossible for small bands and musicians to share their music with the masses.  Unless you had the money to record your music properly and enough to get disk jockeys to play the recordings. The only way to do it cheaply was to get onto a variety show or something similar, this is not an easy thing to do. Now however it is so easy for bands to share their music and to make some money, through the internet. This has led to the “indie” revolution. An indie band is just any band that is unsigned or independent.  I very much enjoy indie music, and without the internet, indie music would not exist.

There are many band and artist that I enjoy listening to, and it’s hard to pick only a few to write about. Some of my favourite bands include the Kooks and the Beatles. I also really enjoy going to live performances around Canberra. I love to hear up and coming bands, as they often have new sounds that i have never heard much like before. One of my favourite local bands to go and watch is Drawing North, I have been to many of their performances, and enjoy them all

Drawing north put on a great show, they are energetic, fast and just fun to watch and listen to. I own one first album, my favourite track on this album is "say it loud." This is not a long song, but it packs a good beat and is catchy. The guitar work is good, the vocals are quite impressive as the singers range is great.

The Kooks are my favorite modern day band. Their music is catchy as hell, and just a pleasure to listen to. All of their songs are written so well, I believe that they are the best, Brit Rock/Indie Rock/Alternate Rock band on the planet. I own and love all of their albums, if I had to pick one song, I would pick matchbox. It has a Jazzy, sort of old school start, and then it changes to something you would never expect.

The Beatles are my favourite, older band. They are just so talented, and work so well. They changed the music seen so much, if it was not for them, music in general would be completely different. I have listened to almost every song on every album of theirs and to choose one song to be my favourite is just impossible. One song I do love is A Day in the Life, because it was a revolutionary song, and because of its content was banned on the radio. The song itself is a amazing song, very well written, like all of their work.

Music is something that takes up a lot of my time. Whether it is playing, writing, experimenting with new sounds or just listening, it is something that i greatly enjoy. I am lucky to have to ability to have access to nice equipment to produce music, through my job at a musical instrument store. I am very interested in the concept of different and new sounds and effects. However people have not been able to play with different sounds for that long. In this post I will be looking at how the music sean, how music sounds and what is used to create music and sounds have changed from the 1950's until now.
At The Start of the 1950's, a new instrument became widely available. This Instrument was the electric guitar. Before the invention of the electric guitar, guitar had never been at the front of stage, as it was to quite to compete with horns. Blues players were the first to use this new instrument, It allowed them to do things they never thought were possible, and form this came rock n roll. Rock n Roll was fast and new, it got the young people moving, and the old people angry. Artists such as Elvis enjoyed great success in the 50's and early 60's. New affects began to be used, a band called the shadows pioneered tremolo effect. In the 1960's a new band was out, The Beatles, with new sounds and ideas. The Beatles were the first band to use feedback on a record. They also used strange new effects and instruments. In 1966 Pysadelic rock was born, This music was loud, distorted, and sounded so very different to anything before. This new style heavily used new affects such as wah wah and fuzz. Fast forward to the 1980's music had changed, it was now being recorded with new technics and affects. New affects such as chorus, flanger, and fazer where used heavily by bands such as Guns n Roses.

The 90's is where a lot of sounds came from which affect todays popular music. The use of modern syntheses and computers heavily involved in affecting the sound came out of the 1990's. From this music has continued to grow and change and will continue to.
